Final Club Meeting for Fall I 12/8

Hello Creative Writers,

Next Wednesday 12/8 is the final official meeting of the LaGuardia CC Creative Writing Club. During this meeting we will be having our holiday luncheon, which will include both hot and cold refreshments and food. Also, club president Jennifer Phanomrat will be bringing homemade goodies.

In addition, since we have had low turnout for our meetings in the past 2 weeks , we have extended our deadline for submissions to our chapbook. The new, hard deadline will be next Wednesday. We are requesting that all submissions be made electronically to the club's email address. If we fail to get at least 20 submissions, which may include multiple submissions by members, we will not publish the chapbook for this semester. Instead we will have a chapbook for the Spring. The Spring chapbook would be inclusive of submissions from the entire 2010-2011 academic year.

Additionally, since it is the holiday season, we would like to bring up 2 important events that are going on at LaGuardia. There is a coat drive sponsored by the Honors Program, Phi Theta Kappa, and the LaGuardia Catholic Student Association. There are donation boxes in the E, M, and C buildings. Also there is a food drive sponsored by the Natural Applied Sciences Dept, Nursing Club and the Godian Fellowship. The donations go to a food pantry located in S Jamaica, Queens run as a non-profit by an elderly woman. They are seeking cash donations and canned food. We are asking all members who attend the final meeting to contribute at least $1 or one can of food, which will then be taken to the Nursing Lab by the club officers.

Please try to attend this final meeting as we also intend to hold club elections. If we do not have all 6 positions completed, this will delay re-certification and may lead to the demise of the club. If you are interested in keeping the club alive or have a desire to run for a position, make every effort to attend.

We really hope to see you all there! It has been a fun semester and we plan on continuing to meet informally during Fall II. So please try to make it and bring a friend. Also faculty and staff are welcome to join us, so spread the word!

Much Thanks and Season's Greetings,
The Creative Writing Club

Notes on our Metting for 5/19

For anyone who was not able to attend the club meeting on 5/19, the following is a list of topics we discussed:
- The Club Blog: Pretty much no one was aware of the fact that the club even had a blog. We talked about different uses for the blog, with the best just being a place to keep an online account of meeting minutes and to make announcements regarding club activities and/or cancellations.
- SAC Proposal for Fall 2010: We talked about making a more robust proposal to the Student Activities Council in order to cover all food costs, the cost of a possible magazine or chapbook, and the fees related to any speakers who our club would like to hire.
- Forum: We also floated the idea of an online club forum where those members who choose to submit pieces of writing can do so and receive comments and feedback. I will be setting this up this week so that over the summer, in lieu of meetings, we can still have members contribute their work.
- Magazine/book: We mentioned the possible creation of a club magazine or book. It would consist of the collected works of club members. We discussed the possible sale of the publication to help cover any club costs which would not be covered through our SAC proposal.
- Email List: We decided that it would be best to have an active e-mail list going to alert club members of any schedule changes and also to lay out the week's agenda so that members could have some writing prepared for the meeting. I will work with the mentors to get the emails that have been provided by current members. Also you can e-mail me @ alan.ramos@live.lagcc.cuny.edu Once the club starts up again in the fall, we will be asking for emails during each meeting.
- Club Activities: We also talked about different activities that could be done during club hours such as free writes, writing exercises, workshops, readings, speakers, etc. Nothing has been finalized but we are open to suggestions as always.
- Officer positions: Additionally, the officers for the Fall Session decided that if possible and if it does not affect the status of our club charter, that we would be willing to hold elections again during the first fall meeting in order to allow for more of a consensus.

There may have been a few other items discussed. Honest this was all I could remember. Since our mentors were not present, it was technically an informal meeting and no official business was conducted. At this week's meeting, we will take a vote on the minutes from last week in order to proceed to new business. If you have any additional suggestions, please email me or come to club with your ideas.

Meeting on 5/19

Just to inform our members, today 5/19 our mentors will not be able to attend the meeting. We are still going to meet however. I today think would be a good time to finally discuss the direction of the club for the next semester, since we didn't get to do so last time. Also, if anyone has written anything that you would like to share, today would be a great day since we won't have any poetry to critique. Look forward to seeing you there!

Ideas on the Future of the Club

For any who are interested in the future of the LaGuardia Creative Writing Club, next Wednesday 5/12/10 after the Translation event in E103 (which runs from 2:15-4:30), we are going to have a brief discussion on what we should be doing during clubs hours for the remainder of the Spring 2010 session and the direction of the club going forward into Fall 2010. Some ideas that have been thrown around by members and one of our mentors, Chris Alexander, include starting meetings with writing exercises, having themed workshops, inviting more guest speakers, and the possible creation of a club 'zine. Remember this is our club and it's here to serve our needs as aspiring writers. If you feel like you have anything to contribute or just want to hear other people's suggestions, we would love to hear from you. So try your best to make this next meeting!

One love,
Alan Ramos

Creative Writing Club Announcement

The LAGCC Creative Writing Club
Wednesdays from 2-4pm in room M-137
March-June 2010

The Creative Writing Club is open to students who are interested in writing poetry, fiction, drama, screenplays -- creative writing of any kind or style!

During our meetings, we engage in a variety of activies:

* We write together, doing creative exercises and sharing our work

* We present work that we've written outside of the club and give each other feedback and encouragment for our projects

* We discuss the craft of writing, problems and issues related to writing, and the work of other writers

* We sometimes invite older, more established writers to visit and lead us in discussion or exercises

* While we do all of these things, we eat tasty snacks!

Most of the activities that happen at club meetings are suggested, planned, and led by the club members themselves. We like to maintain an informal atmosphere, so if you have work you'd like to present or an idea for an exercise or activity, work up some interest with other club members and you can make it happen!

We are also planning to hold an Open Mic event towards the end of the spring semester this year, so that club members will have a chance to share their work in a more public way, in front of other students and friends.

The Creative Writing Club meets on Wednesdays from 2-4pm in room M-137. To be a member, you do not have to attend every meeting. If you can only come for part of the two hours, that's okay too.

Come meet other writers, share your work, and get involved!
